About

The role

Reporting to the CEO, this key appointment will join an established and highly capable and collaborative executive team. This role will appeal to an accomplished leader with experience in  Melbourne who sees the appeal in joining a dynamic, employee-owned, mid-sized, Australian engineering consultancy.

The Executive General Manager (EGM) will lead a portfolio of client groups and projects, including the Victorian Transport, national responsibility for Energy, Industrial and Manufacturing disciplines. This role offers more freedom and influence than equivalent roles in the larger, global consultancies. At pitt&sherry you will be an active participant and decision-maker in the strategic direction of the organisation.

What you need to achieve

This role includes working with the Executive and General Managers (GMs) to ensure a coordinated approach to business development and pipeline management, as well as identifying the project delivery workforce requirements. The EGM oversees a portfolio that represents about 25% of the company's workforce, so they must provide fantastic leadership and direction to the group they are responsible for.

Key Considerations

Industry knowledge, market trends and positioning – the EGM will work closely with their direct reports and GMs to coordinate the firm’s engagements and strategic pursuits. As this is a market-facing role, it is advantageous to have industry networks

Balance strategic direction with project and pursuit delivery – with a diverse portfolio, the EGM must work both at a strategic level and also focus on the opportunities and needs of each project.

Oversee project risks and commercial pressures of the operations –the EGM must have a sound commercial understanding and experience in project delivery. The role will involve executive-level oversight and a hands-on directorship across various projects.

Collaborative executive leadership – build working relationships with fellow EGMs, GMs, COOs and other key stakeholders in the business. As with any role that is responsible for such a large proportion of the workforce, and revenue, the EGM must support the wider businesses’ success and growth.

How will you achieve this?

  • Working closely with the General Managers tasked with each discipline within the portfolio. Pitt&sherry’s GMs are highly experienced leaders, and the EGM will provide executive leadership, direction, and support to their roles.

  • Contribute to the development of the overall business strategy with a deep understanding of relevant markets, clients and geographies

  • By bringing your leadership skills and industry experience to help build on and elevate the firm’s position in the industry

  • Manage and achieve monthly operating budgets, profitability, invoicing and cash collections targets

  • Drive and oversee aggregate view of the project pipeline for their specific portfolio to contribute to the national project pipeline and attend weekly national pipeline forum

  • Achieve project profitability (including the target engagement margin) and collaborate with the CFO to manage the project cash flow

  • Being an active member of the executive team, you will contribute to the internal leadership of pitt&sherry, guidance across the project area of the business, as well as across the project delivery teams you support
